In a press conference today, Gov. Brian Kemp recognized Augusta University Health for its efforts to expand COVID-19 screening through the AU Health ExpressCare app and said the technology will be made available to people across the state.
Kemp said the app, which provides free virtual COVID-19 screenings, 24/7, with no appointment required, will be made available statewide via the AU Health website and Apple and Android app stores. During the virtual visit, users will be asked about their medical history and symptoms. If the individual screens positive based on the information provided, further instruction will be given on how to obtain testing.
“We’re appreciative to the governor for sharing our virtual platform with all Georgians,” said Augusta University President Brooks A. Keel, PhD. “As the state’s only public academic medical center and home to the Medical College of Georgia, it seems only appropriate that our clinical expertise be shared throughout the state to ensure appropriate evaluation and testing of citizens.”
Kemp urged people to use the app or other screening options before visiting an emergency department or doctor’s office.
“This tool allows patients to interact with medical providers without risking exposure,” he said.
“AU Health was the first health system in the state to launch the virtual screening technology last month, which has been used to screen over 8,000 people to date,” said AU Health CEO Katrina Keefer. “AU Health has also been a statewide leader in the establishment of in-housing testing for COVID-19 and drive-thru specimen collection. The health system has resulted over 4,000 tests in its labs alone and is serving as a reference lab for other health care facilities.”
